Washington, D.C. - Leaders of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, along with Jim and Sarah Brady today announced their endorsement of Terri Sewell, running for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives from Alabama’s Seventh Congressional District.
“From her childhood beginnings in Selma, to Princeton University and Harvard Law School and Oxford University, to serving her country on behalf of two U.S. Senators from Alabama, Terri Sewell has worked tirelessly to give back to her community,” said Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign. “She is remarkably qualified to serve the people of Alabama in Congress, and I know she’ll be a terrific member of Congress.”
“Terri Sewell is a fighter, and she’ll fight for common sense gun laws to make our country and Alabama safer for our families and our children,” said Sarah Brady.
Sewell, who became the first black woman partner at a prominent Birmingham law firm, served as the first co-chair of the Women’s Fund “Voices Against Violence” inaugural campaign, which promoted women helping women to overcome domestic violence. The campaign raised more than $70,000 in four months to fight domestic violence in Birmingham, providing funds to establish the first Domestic Violence Court for the Birmingham Municipal Court. Sewell is currently spearheading the effort to get Teach for America to select Alabama’s Black Belt region as a new site in 2010.
“I’m remarkably impressed by Terri Sewell,” Helmke said. “She’s an extraordinary woman. She cares deeply about the fight against violence, and she would be a terrific advocate for the people of Alabama.”
