Washington, D.C. – It’s a fair question, one the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence presumed Americans might want to ask of their members of Congress. And in terms of questions about politicians, there could be worse anatomical references.
The question: “Congress: Do you have a backbone?”
The gun violence prevention group has posted a special “splash page” on its website, in the hopes of starting a conversation about whether this critical skeletal component may be missing from members of the U.S. House of Representatives, in light of last week’s legislative confusion over a bill known as the DISCLOSE Act.
When it comes to Congress’ backbone, the page suggests, “it seems like the gun lobby has swiped it. Why else would you want to give the NRA a special exemption from campaign finance reform that no one else gets?… Eighty-five people die a day and 200 are injured from guns. But instead of solving the problem, you turn campaign finance reform on its head and give a special exemption to the NRA. It is unfair and undemocratic.”
The page can be viewed at www.bradycampaign.org. A full-color image of the human vertebral column is on display. Visitors are invited to sign a petition.
