Statement of Paul Helmke on Combating Homegrown Terrorism

May 27, 2010

Washington, D.C. – Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, issued the following statement about the Obama Administration’s National Security Strategy:

“Today, the Obama Administration included homegrown terrorism in its National Security Strategy in reaction to the Fort Hood shooting and Times Square attempted bombing.  Any serious strategy on combating homegrown terrorism needs to include a plan to stop the easy access in this country of guns to terrorists, like Nidal Hassan and Faisal Shahzad.  The first steps include closing two dangerous, gaping loopholes in our national gun laws- the terror gap and the gun show loophole- that allow known and suspected terrorists to obtain guns and easily evade background checks.  Americans will be safer when we can stop terrorists from arming themselves so easily.”
