Florida front and center in gun-rights debate
Florida's liberal gun laws have been thrust into the national spotlight with the shooting of an unarmed teenager in Central Florida and Gov. Rick Scott's quick rejection of Tampa's bid to tighten gun control outside the Republican National Convention this summer.
Scott's decision last week to deny Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn's request to limit concealed weapons near the convention was not surprising given his open support for gun rights and the National Rifle Association, which advocates on behalf of gun owners.
Last year in a video address to a NRA meeting in Pittsburgh, Scott noted he is a

GOP protocol: No spears, squirt guns but Smith & Wesson allowed
Florida's Republican Gov. Rick Scott rejected Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn's request that firearms be banned during the Republican National Convention in August.
Scott argues that all citizens, including, presumably, inebriated party-weary conventioneers and angry protesters, will be safer if everyone is packing heat. Now, that's some crazy logic.
For the convention, Tampa's city leaders have already banned a host of items (clubs, spears, lumber, hatchets, gas masks, chains and Super Soaker squirt guns) -- but they are prevented by Florida law from outlawing concealed guns.
The feds are understandably worried about the potential for major disruptions and violence during
the
convention.
But,

12-year-old girl among 10 shooting victims
Ten people were shot between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning on the city's South and West Sides, including a man who died this morning after being shot on the Lower West Side and a 12-year-old girl who survived a gunshot wound on the West Side Saturday night.
The girl was standing on a sidewalk in the 500 block of North Springfield Avenue in East Garfield Park about 10:30 p.m. Saturday when she was shot in the left foot, police said. It's not clear exactly what the circumstances were that led up to the shooting, police said. She's

Firearms purchases booming in Wisconsin
Americans are arming themselves like never before, and Wisconsin is smack in the center of the trend.
Firearms-related businesses in the state say they are hard-pressed to meet demand, which they say is being generated by factors ranging from Wisconsin's concealed carry law to presidential politics.
"It's incredible," said Steve Lauer, owner of Lauer Custom Weaponry, a manufacturer of firearms, firearm coatings and accessories in Chippewa Falls. "We can hardly keep up."
Precise figures on firearms sales don't exist. But based on the number of calls made to the FBI and Wisconsin Department of Justice for background checks related

Audit: Illinois FOID card system for buying guns and ammo is broken
For more than four decades, Illinois' Firearm Owners Identification card has been viewed as a first line of defense for protecting the public by trying to keep guns out of the hands of the most dangerous in society.
But a first-ever state audit of the program has found the safety net weakened by bureaucratic loopholes and erroneous and incomplete data that could allow the seriously mental ill and others to keep or get a FOID card to buy firearms and ammunition.

NAACP leader addresses ACLU
Don Jackson, former president of the Illinois NAACP, said Thursday night he is "not impressed" with arguments in support of concealed-carry laws, especially in the wake of the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
In a speech to the Peoria Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union at the IVY Club, Jackson criticized efforts to make Illinois the last state to adopt some form of the law, which allows citizens to carry weapons on their person.
Jackson, president of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, addressed the most liberal version of

Lessons from the South Capitol Street Massacre
In all my days as a youth worker in Southeast Washington, I had never seen anything like it: Three teenagers were gunned down in a horrific drive-by shooting, a tragedy now called the South Capitol Street Massacre.
A domino effect of senseless violence had led to a vicious blood bath and dozens of questions about who and what was to blame. One week after the March 2010 shootings, my co-worker and I hung a school picture of Brishell Jones, 17, the youngest and only female fatality, on the wall of our office. We needed a constant reminder

America's deadly devotion to guns
At an organizing breakfast for National Rifle Association (NRA) grassroots activists, Samuel Richardson, a man with whom I have not exchanged a word, passes me a note. "Please read the book Injustice by Adams," it reads. "He was [sic] lawyer for US Justice Department who prosecuted Black Panther Case."
Quite why Richardson thinks this book is for me is not clear. There are six other people at the table, a couple of them journalists. The fact I am the only black person in a room of about 200 may have something to do with it.

Clothing manufacturers seeing more demand for gun owners
Beautiful clothes aren't just for the typical fashionistas you're probably thinking about. More and more people are trying to look good while they're packing heat!
That's right. Clothing companies are seeing a demand for fashionable clothes that can also be comfortable and helpful while concealing a handgun.
