Brady Report: Lack of Leadership Earns President Obama a Failing Grade

The Brady Center has released a report on President Obama’s performance called President Obama’s First Year: Failed Leadership, Lost Lives.

The President’s concessions to the “guns anywhere” mentality of the gun lobby and lack of leadership for common-sense gun laws has earned him a grade of “F”.

President Obama signed legislation letting people carry concealed weapons in national parks and in checked luggage on Amtrak trains, adopted the gun lobby’s empty rhetoric about just “enforcing the laws on the books,” and muzzled Cabinet members who expressed support for stronger gun laws.

In addition, the White House voiced no objection to people carrying guns near Presidential events and his White House staff removed statements from the White House website that declared support for gun violence prevention laws.

Brady Campaign and Virginia Tech Survivor Expose Irresponsible Dealings at Gun Shows

Colin Goddard, a student who was shot four times at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007, worked with the Brady Campaign to record how easy it is to buy guns without a Brady criminal background check from many irresponsible unlicensed sellers.

Colin’s undercover footage of gun shows has sellers making statements such as “There’s no tax.  There’s no paperwork.  That’s worth something.”  The buyers didn’t even have to show a driver’s license.

Colin’s goal is to encourage Americans to call on Congress to close the loophole that allows dangerous people to buy weapons at gun shows without a Brady background check.

As part of the campaign, Colin sent an email to Brady supporters with a short video of his ordeal at Virginia Tech urging them to forward his video and sign a petition to Congress demanding that it close the gun show loophole.

Our national policy should be: no background check, no gun, no excuses.

Gun Show Loophole Bills Introduced in U.S. Congress

» Help Save Lives: Click here

U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and U.S. Representatives Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Mike Castle (R-DE) have introduced legislation (S. 843 and H.R. 2324) to close the gun show loophole. The loophole allows people to buy guns at gun shows in most states without passing a Brady criminal background check.

A Brady report makes a strong case for Brady background checks on all gun sales in America, including those at gun shows. Allowing dangerous people such as convicted felons and domestic abusers to buy guns without criminal background checks threatens the safety of our families and communities.

Our national policy should be: no background check, no gun, no excuses.

Recommendations for the Current Administration

» Help Save Lives: Click here

The Brady Campaign made early recommendations to the Obama Administration for reform of our nation's gun laws and policies.

The memorandum makes the argument that we should implement strong gun laws and policies that will protect our families and communities from gun violence by making it harder for convicted felons, the dangerously mentally ill, and other prohibited persons to obtain guns.

It also outlines an agenda for reversing the damage done by the previous Administration. The proposal also lists new common sense laws, regulations and policies that would inaugurate a new era of progress in reducing gun deaths and injuries.
